As summer comes to an end here at Laurelville change is in the air. Another successful summer camp has concluded and we look forward to the fall season when we have more hosted groups and of course our Fall Association Gathering. Change has also come to our staff.
Derek Yoder who has served as a Guest Services Host for over 3 years ended his time at Laurelville on July 31. The Yoder Family moved to Harrisonburg, Virginia in early August. Derek will be continuing his studies at Eastern Mennonite Seminary this fall. His wife Laurie accepted a position at Eastern Mennonite University as Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Hygiene Officer. Laurie worked in the kitchen and served as Communications Coordinator at Laurelville. Their daughters Mira, Jill, and Anna begin school this fall.
I had the opportunity to work closely with Derek in Guest Services. Derek is a long time Association Member whose love for Laurelville showed every day. He always talked about his time as a camper, camp counselor, and his volunteer time that he spent here over the years. I don’t think anyone knew our hiking trails better than Derek. He showed Christ-like Hospitality to all of our guests. I think I’ll be answering the question “How is Derek doing?” for some time. I hope the Yoder family enjoyed their time living, working, and playing here.
Ron Dugan has been hired to take Derek’s place in Guest Services. Ron is coming off his role as Pastor at First Assembly of God in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania. His wife Cindy and daughters Rachel and Sara have joined Ron and have settled in at Germantown. Cindy and Rachel had previously worked in the kitchen and will continue to do so. We are excited to have the Dugans join us and to have Ron continue his ministry here.
