Avoid Home Improvement Fraud RESCHEDULED

RESCHEDULED TO THURSDAY, AUG. 27, 8 am, God willing.

As homeowners start planning construction or home improvement projects, it’s vital to protect oneself from home improvement fraud. Learn how in a program at Laurelville Retreat Center at 8 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 27.

Cost is $5 and pre-registration is suggested by calling Laurelville at 724-423-2056 or online through Laurelville’s Facebook page. Light refreshments will be served. The event is open to the public and will be held in the Small Dining Hall.

“Protecting yourself against shady contractors and understanding your rights under the law is paramount as this type of fraud becomes more common,” said presenter James P. Rega II, president and chief investigator of Rega Investigative Group, LLC.  “Having knowledge of what Pennsylvania requires for  business between a contractor and consumer can protect your money and your home or business.”

In this 90-minute presentation, Mr. Rega  will cover: what is the Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act?  The limits of a down payment a contractor can require under the act; types of home improvement fraud and identifying red flag indicators; how to verify a contractor is in good standing; what information a home improvement contract must contain under PA law; auditing the project’s progress/holding the contractor accountable, and steps to take when a homeowner suspects fraud or breach of contract.

James Rega II has given several other well-attended programs locally on avoiding scams.

Prior to becoming a private investigator, he served as a Police Lieutenant for the Southwest Regional Police Department in Belle Vernon, Pa., and as a County Detective for the Washington County’s District Attorney. He has distinguished himself as a sophisticated computer and financial crimes investigator.

Mr. Rega was a sworn investigator to the county grand jury and is recognized as an expert in the area of law enforcement investigations, criminal investigative techniques and security/risk assessment. He is also a certified instructor for the Commonwealth of PA’s Municipal Police Officers’ Training and Education Commission, and is an instructor for the Westmoreland County Community College Police Academy.
